Woody Woodpecker's loony looks were a controversial subject, originally described by the head of Universal short subjects, Bernie Kreiser, as 'the ugliest thing' he had ever seen. Cartoonist Walter Lantz wasn't deterred, and Woody Woodpecker was an overnight smash hit, delighting audiences with his zany antics from the time of his debut in 1940. Woody Woodpecker's appearance changed many times over the years, becoming more cute and streamlined. By the time of the 1944 classic Barber of Seville, Woody Woodpecker was a respected cartoon legend.
